Hunter's Hope Volunteers

Thanks for visiting our volunteer page. Here we try to keep you filled in on what's happening with Hunter's Hope, and where we need volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in WNY for various events, go to the volunteer form located under the "Form" tab at the top of this page. You must fill out the form before you can volunteer. After you complete the online form, or mail the printed form to the office so we will contact you.

Watch this section and the Events heading for upcoming volunteer meetings in your area.

Do you live outside of the WNY area? Would you still like to help Hunter’s Hope? Our fundraisers transfer well to almost anyplace. Would you like to help distribute literature on Universal Newborn Screening? You may live in an area where we have a Hunter’s Hope family nearby. You might be able to assist them with their fundraisers, or just help them with their daily needs. Contact our office for more information. Email edie@huntershope.org or call 1-877-984-HOPE.

1. Events Needing Volunteers

  • Family & Medical Symposium - July 9-13, 2008

  • Rochester Candlelight Ball - August 1, 2008  In order to work this event you must have worked 3 other events throughout the year.

If you would like to work any of the above events, please contact edie@huntershope.org

2. Ongoing Need

  • a. Office Volunteer Program – We’ve had a great response to our request for office volunteers, but we still have some time available if you have the time to give. There is a 10 am to 2 pm shift, and a 2 pm to 5 pm shift. We’d love to have you help out if you’re interested.

3. Current Fundraisers

  • a. 2008 Boyd’s Bear – Our 2008 Boyd’s Bear is named “Courage” and you can see him on the website.
  • b. Universal Newborn Screening bracelets - These bracelets are great conversation starters and our brochure helps you tell the story in support on universal newborn screening for all children. New York State has reacted favorably and will be testing for all 44 diseases that currently have tests. New York will also be a pilot state for the new Krabbe Disease newborn screening test. Go to http://www.huntershope.org/giving/default.asp for the bracelets, and http://www.huntershope.org/krabbe/newborn_scrn.asp for more information.
  • c. Aluminum Tabs - Many of you know that we collect the aluminum beverage can tabs to raise money for the Foundation. Several schools have already signed up to participate for the upcoming school year. An additional drop off is located at the Martin's Grocery store on Maple Road near Boulevard Mall. There is also a collection container at the Tops store on Clark Street in Hamburg. Plus you can always bring them to one of our volunteer meetings for us to collect.
  • d. Hope and A Future - This has been our “paper candle” campaign, so called because of the candle flame in our logo. This campaign is a $1 donation similar to the ones you might see for several other national organizations. The difference with ours is that there is a tear off panel for the donor giving them valuable information about the disease and the Foundation. We are looking to place this in stores or other businesses for a one month period. Posters and other information about Hunter’s Hope can be provided. Pads and posters are ready to be sent out. We have had some local high school students needing community service for graduation help take this campaign to the community with encouraging results. Call for details!

In Memory of Marie Fiust

It is with a sad heart we have to tell you that one of our very dear volunteers passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2008. Marie Fiust, 73 years old, has been with the foundation almost since the beginning. Her first event was a candle tying party at the Marriott Hotel in 1998 and her last event was in March 2008.Marie worked the coat check at the Ball every year and made beautiful baby blankets and Christening gowns for auction items.

Marie did not drive but took the bus to many events. Marie worked almost every event including Flowers for Hope, Motorcycle Fun Run, Broadway Market and was our pop lady at Hunter’s Day of Hope for Children.

As Marie walks now with the Lord and the children she worked so hard for, we will miss her sadly but remember her dearly.
